A Betatron is a cyclic accelerator in which electrons move in a vacuum accelerating chamber along a circular trajectory acquiring energy by fields produced by an electromagnet.
Electrons are injected into accelerating chamber with the use of an electron gun with a thermal emission cathode.
As the electrons whirl around in the tube they gain energy, a pulse to the contractor winding increases the number of captured electrons, a pulse initiated to the expansion winding drives them into a larger spiral. They will eventually move far enough outward in their orbit to strike the Tantalum target. The energy lost in that stopping event, will generate X-rays.
